How to Install Govee Permanent Outdoor Lights: A Step-by-Step Guide
You ordered your Govee permanent outdoor lights. The box is sitting in your garage. Now what?
Installing Govee permanent lights is a manageable DIY project for most homeowners, but there are a handful of decisions you need to make before you pick up a drill. This guide walks you through the full process from planning your layout to powering on for the first time, including the one step that most installers skip and end up regretting.
What You Need Before You Start
Gather everything before you get on a ladder. Stopping mid-install to run to the hardware store is how mistakes happen.
Tools:
- Drill with appropriate bits for your substrate (wood, stucco, brick, or composite)
- Measuring tape
- Chalk line or pencil
- Ladder tall enough to reach your roofline
- Level
- Wire staples or cable clips (if not using a mounting track)

A note on mounting hardware: Govee ships plastic clips and adhesive tape with every kit. These work, but they have a well-known failure mode. The adhesive loses grip in heat and humidity, and the clips themselves flex over time, which causes the light pucks to droop and rotate out of alignment. If a clean, finished look matters to you, consider upgrading to an aluminum mounting track before you start. More on that in a moment.
Step 1: Plan Your Layout and Measure Your Roofline
Walk the perimeter of your home and decide which sections you want to light. Measure each run carefully and note every inside corner, outside corner, and transition point.
Govee kits come in multiple sizes depending on the model. The Govee 2 is available in 50ft, 100ft, and 150ft kits. The Govee Pro is available in 100ft, 150ft, and 200ft kits. Know your total footage before you order so you buy the right kit size and have enough mounting hardware to cover the full run. If your roofline exceeds the largest kit size, the Pro is cuttable and extendable up to a total of 200ft.
Mark the line where your lights will mount. Most homeowners run the lights just under the fascia, flush with the roofline. Use a chalk line to keep your run straight. A crooked install is nearly impossible to fix after the hardware is in place.
Step 2: Decide How You Are Mounting
This is the step most guides gloss over, and it is the most important decision you will make.
Govee gives you two options in the box: adhesive clips and small plastic mounting clips that you screw directly into your fascia. Both work for a basic install, but both have limitations.
Adhesive clips are fast but not permanent. They work well on smooth painted surfaces in moderate climates. In Minnesota winters or hot summer sun, the adhesive can fail.
Screw-mount plastic clips are more secure, but the clips themselves have flex in them. Over a season, heat cycling causes the clips to loosen and the puck angles shift. You end up with lights pointing in different directions.
Aluminum mounting track is the third option and the one that solves both problems. A powder-coated aluminum track mounts once, holds permanently, and keeps every puck aligned in exactly the same direction. The track also hides the wire run entirely, so all you see from the ground is a clean line of light against your fascia.

Step 3: Mount Your Hardware
If using Govee's plastic clips: Space the clips according to Govee's included instructions, typically every 12 to 18 inches. Pre-drill your holes and use screws appropriate for your substrate. Do not overtighten on composite or vinyl fascia.
If using GlowTrax aluminum track:
- Snap your track sections together along your chalk line.
- Use the hinges at inside and outside corners to maintain a clean angle.
- Secure the track with screws appropriate for your fascia material, spaced according to the installation instructions included with your kit.
- Cap the ends with the included end caps.
- Run your Govee wire through the track channel before inserting the pucks. This is what hides the wire from view.
The track ships in white and is paintable. If your fascia is a color other than white, paint the track before mounting. Follow the paint manufacturer's recommendations for exterior aluminum surfaces.
Step 4: Insert the Light Pucks
Once your mounting hardware is in place, insert each light puck. If you are using GlowTrax, the pucks click into the track channel at even intervals and lock in a consistent downward angle. If you are using Govee's clips, clip each puck to the mounting hardware per Govee's instructions.
Work your way around the roofline, keeping the wire taut and neat between pucks. Do not stretch the wire. Govee builds some slack into the run for a reason.
Step 5: Route Your Wire and Connect the Controller
The wire from your light run needs to reach the controller box. Plan your route before you start. Ideally the controller mounts in a protected location, out of direct rain exposure, near a GFCI outlet.
Route the wire along your fascia or down a corner of the house to reach the controller. Use staples or clips rated for outdoor use to keep the wire flat against the surface. Keep the wire away from sharp edges that could damage the insulation over time.
Plug the light string into the controller and the controller into your power outlet.
Step 6: Download the Govee App and Configure Your Lights
Govee lights are controlled through the Govee Home app, available on iOS and Android. Download the app and create an account if you do not have one.
Follow the in-app setup to connect your controller to your WiFi network. Once connected, you can set schedules, choose colors, create effects, and sync your lights to music or holidays. The app is well-designed and intuitive. Most homeowners have their lights configured within 15 minutes of powering on.
Walk your roofline from the ground and check that all pucks are seated correctly and pointing in a consistent direction. If you notice any pucks angled differently than the others, now is the time to correct them before the install is fully buttoned up.
Common Installation Mistakes to Avoid
Not measuring twice. Running short of light string or mounting hardware mid-install is frustrating. Measure your full roofline before you order anything.
Skipping the chalk line. A few feet into an install, small deviations add up. A straight chalk line takes five minutes and keeps your run true the entire length of the house.
Mounting in direct sunlight without considering adhesive failure. Govee's adhesive clips are not rated for prolonged heat exposure on south or west-facing walls. If your fascia gets hot in the afternoon sun, use screw-mount hardware.
Not hiding the wire. The wire is the most visible part of the install from the street. Whether you use a GlowTrax track or run the wire behind your fascia trim, plan your wire management before you mount anything.
Rushing the corner transitions. Inside and outside corners are where most installs look amateur. Take your time at every corner. If you are using GlowTrax, the hinges handle this cleanly. If you are using Govee clips, leave a little extra slack in the wire at each corner so the pucks sit flush rather than pulling tight.
How Long Does Installation Take?
A single-story home with a straightforward roofline typically takes four to six hours for a first-time installer. A two-story home or a home with multiple rooflines and gables can take a full day. Budget more time than you think you need, especially for your first install.
The most time-consuming parts are the planning and the corner transitions. The actual puck insertion goes quickly once your hardware is mounted.
