Most homes have wood fascia along the roofline. Wood is forgiving. You can drive a screw anywhere, adhesive tape bonds to it well, and the standard Govee installation instructions assume you have it. If your home is one of those homes, installation is straightforward.
A lot of homes are not that home.
Metal soffits, aluminum fascia, stucco siding, fiber cement, brick, and vinyl are all common on modern and recently built houses. These surfaces require a different approach. Adhesive tape fails faster on smooth metal and painted surfaces than it does on wood. Standard screws strip or spin in hollow aluminum. And stucco and masonry need anchors most homeowners have never used before.
This guide covers exactly what to do on each surface type so your Govee lights and GlowTrax track go up cleanly and stay up.
Why the surface type matters more than most people expect
The stock Govee installation uses VHB adhesive tape. That tape is rated for clean, flat, slightly porous surfaces like painted wood. On smooth metal or painted aluminum, the bond area is smaller and the tape has nothing to grip. Heat cycles, freeze-thaw, and direct sun work against the adhesive much faster. On stucco, the surface is too rough and irregular for tape to make full contact at all.
The second issue is structural. When you are mounting track to hold lights across a roofline that might be 100 to 200 feet long, the combined weight and wind load adds up. Even a modest flex in the mounting point over time causes lights to shift, sag, or pull away from the surface. That is why proper mechanical fastening matters on any surface, and why it matters even more on surfaces that do not grip tape well to begin with.
GlowTrax aluminum track is rigid, which distributes load across the full length of each section rather than concentrating stress at each individual mounting point. That is an advantage on any surface. On hard surfaces, it is essential.
Metal soffits and aluminum fascia
Metal soffits are one of the most common challenging surfaces for permanent light installs. They are hollow, the metal gauge is thin, and standard wood screws will not hold reliably.
The right fastener for hollow aluminum soffit is a self-tapping sheet metal screw, sometimes called a Tek screw. These have a hardened tip that drills through light-gauge metal without a pilot hole and threads cut to grip the material. Use a size appropriate for the gauge of your soffit material and follow the manufacturer's recommendations for your specific fastener.
A few things to know before you drive the first screw:
Locate the framing. Hollow aluminum soffit panels typically span between J-channels or furring strips. If you can find the framing behind the panel, screwing into it gives you a much more solid mount than screwing through the panel alone. A stud finder works on wood framing behind metal panels. If you cannot locate framing, the sheet metal approach still works but space your mounting points closer together to distribute the load.
Pre-drill on thicker gauge. Lighter-gauge aluminum (common on residential soffits) usually takes a self-tapping screw without a pilot hole. On thicker fascia material, a small pilot hole prevents the screw from wandering and makes for a cleaner installation.
Do not overtighten. Aluminum is soft. Overtightening a screw will strip the hole or deform the panel. Drive until snug, then stop.
Use stainless steel or coated fasteners. Bare steel screws in aluminum cause galvanic corrosion over time, which stains the surface and weakens the connection. Stainless steel or zinc-coated screws eliminate that problem.
Stucco
Stucco looks solid but is typically a layered system: a finish coat, a base coat, and a wire mesh or foam substrate behind it. Driving a standard screw into stucco without the right anchor will either crack the surface or pull out under load.
The correct approach depends on what is behind the stucco:
If there is wood framing or OSB sheathing behind the stucco, you can use stucco screws or masonry screws long enough to pass through the stucco layers and bite into the wood behind. Finding the studs is the key step. A stud finder works through most stucco, though you may need to mark your stud locations before running track so your mounting points align.
If the stucco is over masonry or concrete block, use a hammer drill and masonry anchors. Plastic expansion anchors sized for your screw diameter are widely available and hold very well in masonry. Drill your hole, blow out the dust, tap in the anchor, and drive your screw.
One note on stucco specifically: the track profile of GlowTrax sits flat against the mounting surface, which means minor surface texture variations do not affect the install. The track bridges small irregularities without creating gaps that would catch water or debris.
Fiber cement siding and Hardie board
Fiber cement is denser than wood and harder to drill, but it behaves more like wood than masonry. You can use standard exterior screws, but pre-drilling is recommended to avoid cracking. Use a bit sized to the shank of the screw, not the threads, and drill at low speed. High-speed drilling generates heat that can cause fiber cement to fracture around the hole.
Locate studs before drilling when possible. Fiber cement siding is typically installed over a weather barrier and sheathing, and screwing into the stud gives you the strongest possible mount. Where studs are not available, fiber cement anchors or toggle bolts appropriate for the panel thickness are your next option.
Brick and mortar joints
Brick itself is hard and brittle. Avoid drilling directly into brick face unless you have the right masonry bit and a hammer drill. Mortar joints are the better target. Mortar is softer than brick, easier to drill, and easier to repair if you ever need to remove the installation.
Use a hammer drill with a masonry bit sized to your anchor. Drive the anchor into the mortar joint, let any dust settle, and then set your screw. Standard plastic expansion anchors rated for masonry work well here. For heavy-gauge aluminum track over a long run, sleeve anchors provide an even more secure connection.
Vinyl siding
Vinyl siding presents a specific challenge: it is designed to float and flex with temperature changes, not to be rigidly fastened. Screwing directly through vinyl into the substrate behind it can crack the panels, especially in cold weather when the material is more brittle.
The recommended approach is to use siding hooks or undereave hooks designed for vinyl, which clip to the bottom edge of the siding panel without penetrating the surface at all. Alternatively, if the installation area is at the roofline near the fascia rather than on the siding face itself, you may be able to bypass the vinyl entirely and mount directly to wood fascia or the framing behind it.
If your roofline gives you access to the fascia board above the vinyl, that is always the preferred mounting point for GlowTrax track.
Surfaces with no wood backing at all
Some modern homes, particularly those with all-aluminum exteriors, heavy EIFS foam systems, or commercial-style construction, have no accessible wood framing near the roofline at all. These are the hardest cases.
The options here are:
Find the rafter tails. Even on homes without a traditional fascia board, the rafter structure typically comes to a point at the roofline. In some cases you can locate rafter tails through the soffit material and screw into them. This requires more patience in locating the framing but produces the strongest possible mount.
Use structural masonry anchors. On homes where the roofline terminates against a masonry wall or concrete soffit, masonry anchors appropriate for the load are the solution. Size your anchors to the weight of the run and follow the anchor manufacturer's recommendations.
Consult a professional. There is no shame in this. Some roofline configurations are genuinely complex, and a general contractor or carpenter who can see the actual structure can identify mounting solutions that are not visible from the outside. One thing all of these surfaces have in common
Regardless of surface type, the reason GlowTrax aluminum track works better than tape-and-clip on any of these substrates is the same: the load is distributed, not concentrated.
When you hang lights from individual plastic clips or adhesive points, every stress event, whether that is wind, ice load, or a temperature swing, is concentrated at each individual fastening point. One failed clip and the lights shift. Two or three failed clips and the run sags.
When lights are seated in an aluminum track that is mechanically fastened to the structure at regular intervals, the load spreads across the entire run. Any individual fastener can be under-stressed because the track is doing the work of holding position between the mounting points. That is why track-mounted lights hold their line for years on surfaces where clips and tape fail in a single season.
On challenging surfaces, that structural advantage matters even more than it does on wood. Getting the fastening right is the first job. GlowTrax handles everything after that.
Before you start
A few things worth confirming before you get on the ladder:
Identify your surface material before buying fasteners. The right anchor for hollow aluminum soffit is different from the right anchor for stucco over masonry. Buying the right hardware before you start saves a second trip.
Check your GlowTrax model against your Govee model. GlowTrax Classic fits the Govee Original, Govee 2, and Elite (H705 model line). GlowTrax Pro fits Govee Pro models (H706 model line). Getting this right before installation means the lights drop into the track on the first try.
Plan your mounting point spacing. GlowTrax track sections connect end to end along your roofline. Space your fasteners so that each track section has at least two solid mounting points. On hollow or soft surfaces, closer spacing is better.
Have the right tools ready. A drill with appropriate bits for your surface, a level, a tape measure, and the fasteners specific to your substrate. On masonry, add a hammer drill. On metal soffit, add a set of sheet metal screws in the right size for your gauge.
The surface is only the first part of the problem. Once the track is up and fastened correctly, the rest of the install is the same as any other GlowTrax job: lights click in, wires route through the channel, and the finished look is clean regardless of what the wall or soffit behind it is made of.
